Frankfurt Airport's Terminal 3 enters final trials before April 23 launch

Frankfurt Airport's Terminal 3 is nearing its official launch after entering the final trial phase. Starting on 23 April, the new facility will serve 57 major airlines, including Emirates, Etihad Airways and Cathay Pacific. Over three weeks, thousands of test passengers are putting the terminal through rigorous simulations to ensure smooth operations.

The trials involve 8,000 volunteers who experience the full travel process, from check-in to baggage collection. Each simulation lasts around five hours, with participants paid €13.90 per hour for their time. The tests also cover arrivals, requiring volunteers to retrieve their luggage from the carousel at the end of the run.

Before the terminal opens, all 57 airlines must have their staff take part in the trial operations. The project director overseeing the process reported that the phase is progressing 'very, very well'. While the futuristic central plaza—featuring seating and retail spaces—is mostly complete, some shops remain under construction during the simulations. The goal is to identify and resolve any issues before the terminal welcomes its first real passengers. Airlines such as China Southern and Etihad Airways will soon operate from the new facility, which aims to set a high standard for efficiency and passenger experience.

Terminal 3's opening on 23 April marks a major expansion for Frankfurt Airport. The extensive trials, involving thousands of test passengers and airline staff, are designed to guarantee seamless operations from day one. Once fully operational, the terminal will handle flights for 57 carriers, reinforcing the airport's role as a global hub.
