Frankfurt Airport’s new flight path could slash noise for three key towns
Three municipalities - Bischofsheim, Ginsheim-Gustavsburg, and Rüsselsheim - are set to benefit from significant noise relief, with Rüsselsheim experiencing a notable improvement. They are united in supporting Variant C of the Segmented Approach for Frankfurt Airport's southern runway.
The Segmented Approach, introduced in 2011, aims to reduce noise pollution. It operates from 2200 to 0000 hours (military time) during easterly flights. Initially, it was used only for delayed landings between 2300 and 0000 hours, but this was extended to the current timeframe in July 2024.
Three alternative flight paths - Variants A, B, and C - were developed to optimize the approach. Variant C, proposed by the three municipalities, runs centrally between them. This ensures a fairer distribution of noise burdens. It is scheduled for discussion by the Airport Noise Protection Commission on November 12, 2025. The optimized route variant C will replace the current DES SegApp route, agreed upon by the municipalities.
The adoption of Variant C in the Segmented Approach promises significant noise relief for Bischofsheim and Ginsheim-Gustavsburg, and a marked improvement for Rüsselsheim. The municipalities' joint advocacy for this variant demonstrates their commitment to balancing overall noise reduction with equitable burden distribution.
