Four Injured: Azerbaijani Driver Crashes into Bus Stop
A 32-year-old Azerbaijani man drove his car into a crowd at a bus stop in Giessen on Monday, December 22, 2025. The incident left one woman seriously injured and three others, including the driver, with minor wounds. Authorities have ruled out political or terrorist motives but are examining whether a medical condition or substance use played a role.
The crash took place near Protestant St. John’s Church in central Giessen. Before reaching the bus stop, the driver had already collided with two other vehicles in his Audi. Instead of stopping, he continued towards the waiting crowd.
After hitting the pedestrians, the man did not halt immediately. His car only came to a standstill roughly 200 metres away, in Johannesstraße. Police later detained him at the scene. Hesse’s Interior Minister Roman Poseck (CDU) stated that early investigations suggested no political or terrorist intent. Reports indicate the driver, a Giessen resident, may have been experiencing mental health issues. Authorities are now checking whether drugs or alcohol influenced his actions.
The unnamed driver remains under investigation for attempted murder. His medical history and potential impairment are key focuses of the ongoing probe. Meanwhile, the injured woman continues to receive treatment for her serious wounds.
