Former Adjuster Arrested for $200k Insurance Fraud Scheme
Former New Jersey insurance adjuster, John Philbin, has been arrested for allegedly committing insurance fraud. Philbin, while working for Assurant Insurance Co., is accused of creating and approving 11 phony auto insurance claims using false identities. Philbin exploited his role as a property claims adjuster to submit the fraudulent car insurance quotes. He created these claims between October 3, 2022, and May 22, 2023, with no other Assurant employees identified as involved in the scheme. To support these claims, Philbin fabricated vendor estimates and invoices for non-existent companies. Investigators found that Philbin linked himself to the fraudulent activities through internal audit logs and document metadata. He then directed nearly $200,000 in payments to bank accounts under his control, using Post Office boxes in Clementon and Blackwood. Philbin has been charged with insurance fraud and theft by deception. The investigation is ongoing, and no further details about potential accomplices or victims have been released. Philbin's alleged actions have resulted in significant financial loss, and the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
