Forest managers successfully market walnuts: Business booms in Advent

In Hesse’s Ried region, a couple has turned forestry into a thriving walnut business. Frank Flasche and Christine Straub began transforming parts of their woodland into walnut plantations back in 2005. Their focus on sustainable methods and direct sales has since built a successful enterprise.

The pair chose heat- and drought-resistant walnut varieties to suit the area’s heavy soils and mild climate. Over time, they expanded their farm, prioritising cultivars that could withstand local conditions. Flasche, in particular, developed a deep interest in different walnut types, including French and German varieties.

Their operation now includes sorting and cracking machines to process the harvest. Beyond selling whole nuts, they produce walnut oil, pesto, and even liqueur. Mechanical harvesting helps keep the business efficient and environmentally friendly.

Sales peak in the weeks before Christmas, when demand for their products surges. By cutting out middlemen, the couple ensures better profits while maintaining close ties with customers.

The farm’s sustainable approach has paid off, with strong sales and a loyal customer base. Their direct-to-consumer model and seasonal products keep the business stable year after year. The success of their walnut venture now stands as a testament to careful planning and adaptability.
