Flag-hoisting ceremony in the University town of Marburg in December 2025
Marburg will display its city flag at key locations throughout December to mark three important dates. The flag-raising events will honour Hessian Constitution Day, International Day of Persons with Disabilities, and Human Rights Day. Each occasion highlights the city’s commitment to civic values and inclusivity.
The first event takes place on December 1, Hessian Constitution Day. The city flag will fly from 7:00 AM until dusk at public buildings, including the historic town hall. This date marks the 1946 adoption of the Hessian Constitution, later updated in 2018 after a public vote.
On December 3, the flag will again be hoisted at the town hall for International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Established in 1993, the day focuses on promoting dignity, rights, and well-being for people with disabilities. The final display occurs on December 10, Human Rights Day. The flag will be raised from dawn until sunset at the town hall, aligning with the 1948 adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Lord Mayor Dr. Thomas Spies referenced its opening article, reaffirming Marburg’s dedication to equality, justice, and tolerance. The city regularly uses flag-raising ceremonies to draw attention to significant civic and international observances.
