Five German cities unite against Frankfurt Airport’s controversial landing plan
Representatives from multiple cities in the Offenbach district, including Hainburg, Heusenstamm, Obertshausen, Rodgau, and Seligenstadt, have united to oppose Frankfurt Airport's planned 'Segmented Approach' landing procedure. They intend to reject it in the upcoming Aircraft Noise Commission meeting.
The municipalities have jointly passed a resolution, demanding a transparent and holistic aviation noise protection strategy. They argue that the 'Segmented Approach' fails to reduce municipal noise and instead shifts the burden to new residential areas without proper soundproofing. The procedure would increase the number of people exposed to noise and violate principles of legitimate expectation, as residents had adjusted to the existing noise conditions.
Heusenstamm's mayor, Steffen Ball, has publicly rejected the introduction of the 'Segmented Approach' on grounds of noise protection, legitimate expectation, and social and regional equity. Neu-Isenburg's mayor, Dirk Gene Hagelstein, and Egelsbach's mayor, Tobias Wilbrand, have also expressed support for the concerns of the five municipalities and warned of the consequences of the planned noise displacements.
The participating representatives intend to reject the 'Segmented Approach' procedure in the upcoming Aircraft Noise Commission meeting. They call on the responsible authorities to abandon the procedure and demand a comprehensive strategy addressing all sources of traffic noise. The municipalities seek a transparent, legally sound, and holistic noise protection strategy that accounts for all relevant noise sources and avoids one-sided noise displacements.
