Firefighters Warn of Christmas Fire Risks with Candles and Decorations

The Main-Taunus District Fire Brigade Association has shared key safety tips to prevent fires during the Christmas season. With real candles, decorations, and festive lights in use, extra caution is needed to avoid accidents. Candles should never be left unattended, especially in homes with children or pets. Always place them in stable, non-flammable holders and keep them away from flammable materials like dry branches or curtains. The fire brigade advises extinguishing candles in good time to reduce risks.

When lighting a Christmas tree, start from the top and work downwards. Extinguish them in reverse order to prevent hot wax from dripping onto lower branches. A fire extinguisher should be kept nearby whenever real candles are used. Matches and lighters must be stored out of children's reach. Electrical light strings should also be checked for damage and only certified products used. If a fire starts, only attempt to put it out if safe—otherwise, call emergency services immediately on 112.

The fire brigade has urged residents to follow these precautions for a fire-free Christmas. Their message comes as families prepare to celebrate with decorations and candles. A safe holiday season remains the top priority for local authorities.
