Filipino Novel Finds New Life in Sri Lanka Through Sinhalese Translation
The Age of Umbrage, a debut novel by Filipino author Jessica Zafra, has found a new audience in Sri Lanka. Translated into Sinhalese, the novel explores themes of identity, class, and politics in 1980s Manila, resonating with both German and Sri Lankan readers.
The Sinhalese edition, titled 'Through the Shadows', is the first Filipino novel published in Sri Lanka. Zafra reflected on hearing her work in Sinhalese, noting the new title's closeness to her original intent. The translation was a collaboration between Zafra and Goodreads Lanka, led by publisher Pradeep Gamega.
The launch event featured readings in both English and Sinhalese, highlighting the novel's universal appeal. Gamega considers the translation an act of literary diplomacy, aiming to bridge cultures and share emotions. Goodreads Lanka chose the Sinhalese title 'Through the Shadows' based on emotional connection, cultural resonance, and literary strength. Gamega aims to foster more Asian literary exchanges through translations like 'The Age of Umbrage'.
