Fatal Crash on State Road 3398 Leaves Driver and Horse Dead
A 26-year-old man died in a crash involving a loose horse on State Road 3398 between Hüttenfeld and Heppenheim. The accident occurred early on March 19, leaving both the driver and the animal dead. Authorities are still investigating how the horse ended up on the roadway.
The collision took place near the first Weschnitz Bridge, where the car struck the horse before flipping and landing in a nearby field. Emergency services responded quickly, but the driver could not be saved. The road remained fully closed until around 10:00 a.m. while police conducted their investigation and cleared the scene.
A police helicopter was deployed to capture aerial images of the crash site. The Darmstadt Public Prosecutor's Office has since ordered a forensic expert to examine the circumstances of the accident. Meanwhile, the Lower Water Authority was alerted after fuel and fluids from the vehicle leaked into the surrounding soil.
The exact cause of the accident remains unclear, and investigators have not yet determined how the horse came to be on the road. The case is still under active investigation, with authorities working to piece together the events leading up to the fatal collision.
