Fake German law firm betrugsrecht.de lures fraud victims into crypto scams
A fake law firm called betrugsrecht.de is targeting fraud victims with false promises of recovering lost funds. The website claims to specialise in investment fraud, crypto scams, and other financial crimes. However, multiple red flags suggest it is part of an elaborate recovery scam itself.
The site advertises legal help for victims of romance fraud, bank fraud, and online shopping scams. It even lists fabricated success stories to appear legitimate. Yet, the firm's supposed founder, Dr. Thomas Weber, does not appear in Germany's official lawyer directory.
The domain's ownership details are hidden, which is unusual for a real lawyer firm. The address provided houses several businesses, but none matches betrugsrecht.de. The company named in the legal notice, GSCP Verwaltungs GmbH, deals with corporate investmentsānot legal services.
Victims are instructed to set up a Kraken crypto account and deposit 0.1 Bitcoin (around ā¬6,000) to process a chargeback. Once the payment is made, scammers either disappear or demand more fees. The domain was also suspiciously renewed late in 2025, adding to doubts about its legitimacy.
Recovering stolen crypto is already difficult due to legal and technical hurdles. German police recorded over 402,000 fraud cases in 2024, with cybercrime making up a large share. However, no official statistics track this specific type of scam, as it falls under broader fraud categories.
The website's AI-generated staff photos and hidden ownership details confirm its fraudulent nature. Victims risk losing even more money if they follow the scam's instructions. Authorities warn that legitimate legal recovery services never demand upfront crypto payments.
