Exports to Bulgaria significantly increased
Trade between Germany and Bulgaria saw major shifts in the first ten months of 2025. German exports to Bulgaria climbed by 7.2%, hitting €5.3 billion, while imports from Bulgaria soared by 345.3% to €6.6 billion. Despite this surge in imports, Germany still maintained a modest trade surplus of €84.1 million.
From January to October 2025, Germany exported €5.3 billion worth of goods to Bulgaria, marking a 7.2% rise compared to the same period the previous year. The leading exports included motor vehicles and auto parts (€919.4 million), machinery (€692.0 million), and food products (€461.3 million). Bulgaria ranked as Germany’s 40th most important export market during this time.
On the import side, Bulgaria sent €5.2 billion worth of goods to Germany—a 6.2% drop from the prior year. However, this figure masked a dramatic 345.3% increase in certain imports, pushing Bulgaria to 36th place among Germany’s top import partners. The trade balance remained positive for Germany, with a surplus of €84.1 million in the ten-month period. The growth in exports reflects a long-term trend. German sales to Bulgaria have more than doubled since 2007, reaching €5.9 billion by 2024. Recent months have shown particularly strong demand for German-made vehicles, machinery, and foodstuffs.
The latest trade figures highlight Bulgaria’s growing role as both a buyer and supplier for Germany. While German exports continue to expand steadily, the sharp rise in imports suggests shifting economic dynamics. The overall trade surplus, though small, confirms Germany’s position as a net exporter to Bulgaria in 2025.
