Explosion destroys cigarette vending machine in Wiesbaden heist

A cigarette vending machine was destroyed in an early-morning explosion on Hermann-Brill-Straße in Wiesbaden. Residents reported a loud blast just after 2 a.m. on Saturday, prompting police to launch an immediate investigation. The attackers escaped with the cash box and an unknown number of cigarettes.

Witnesses described seeing three unidentified individuals near the damaged machine shortly after the explosion. The suspects had already fled by the time officers arrived, leaving behind a heavily wrecked vending unit. Police secured the scene and began gathering forensic evidence, including explosive residues and surveillance footage from nearby cameras.

Authorities are now reviewing CCTV recordings from the area and working with the explosives detection unit, which uses trained dogs to trace explosive materials. Digital tracking methods, such as ANPR cameras and mobile phone data, are also being employed to locate the suspects. In similar cases, like the 2022 Taunus safe burglaries, federal agencies such as the BKA have provided ballistic and trace analysis support.

The investigation remains ongoing, with police focusing on forensic and digital leads. No arrests have been made so far, but the methods used mirror those in past explosive-related thefts. The stolen cash and cigarettes have yet to be recovered.
