Euro-Office emerges as Europe's open-source rival to Microsoft Office

A new open-source office suite called Euro-Office is being developed as a European alternative to Microsoft Office. The project is led by Nextcloud and IONOS, with plans to release a stable version this summer. Both companies aim to replace the current office component in their platforms with this new solution. Nextcloud and IONOS have chosen to fork the open-source parts of OnlyOffice for Euro-Office. The decision was based on OnlyOffice's more modern architecture compared to LibreOffice and Collabora. Developers have also reviewed and rebuilt non-open components to improve security.

The suite is designed for a wide range of users, from small businesses to public sector organisations. Nextcloud is taking the lead in development, focusing on tighter integration of applications and AI features. The goal is to create a seamless experience for users. To speed up progress, both companies plan to hire a double-digit number of developers. They are also inviting public institutions and community contributors to join the project. Once ready, Euro-Office will replace Collabora in Nextcloud and the IONOS Nextcloud Workspace.

Euro-Office is set to launch in its first stable version this summer. The project aims to provide a secure, open-source alternative to Microsoft Office. Public and private organisations will soon have a new option for office software.
