Renovation of historic police building progresses - Erfurt's Historic Police HQ Restoration Near Completion at €46.3M

The restoration of Erfurt's historic Thuringian State Police Directorate building is nearing completion, with a total cost of approximately €46.3 million. The building, originally constructed between 1937 and 1939, has a rich history that includes housing regional and district courts, serving as a base for the Volkspolizei and Stasi during the GDR era, and being occupied by civil rights activists in 1989 to protect secret police files.

The renovation project has been jointly funded by the federal government, the state of Thuringia, and the city of Erfurt. Upon completion, the building will once again serve as a workplace for police employees by 2027. During a recent ceremony, a time capsule containing contemporary documents and coins was placed in the building's dome, marking the occasion with a 'turmknopffest'.

The restored building will house the State Police Directorate and the State Operations Center, continuing its role in Thuringia's law enforcement history. The extensive renovation ensures that this historic structure remains a vital part of the city's landscape and heritage.
