Elderly Wetzlar woman targeted by fake telephone company scammers

An elderly woman in Wetzlar was targeted by con artists who tricked their way into her home under false pretenses. The pair posed as telephone company employees, claiming they needed to check her line. This incident marks the first reported case of its kind in the region over the past year.

The scam unfolded when the two suspects convinced the 88-year-old victim to let them inside. One, a woman described as around 30, stocky, with short hair and wearing jeans, distracted the resident. Meanwhile, her male accomplice—roughly 5'7" (170 cm in feet), slim, with a slightly darker complexion, a mustache, and a hooded jacket with fur trim—searched the apartment for valuables.

Despite their efforts, the thieves left without stealing anything. Police note that such criminals often rely on deception, using tactics like faking emergencies, impersonating officials, or pretending to have personal ties. Other common ruses include the 'Glass of Water' Trick, the 'Pen and Paper' Trick, and the 'Flower or Gift Drop-Off' Trick.

Authorities have confirmed no similar fraud attempts involving fake service providers in Wetzlar over the last twelve months.

Wetzlar police are now appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information about the suspects is urged to call 06441/9180. The investigation remains ongoing, with officers reviewing details of the incident.
