Elderly Rodgau men targeted in coordinated bank fraud scams
Two elderly men in Rodgau were targeted by suspected fraudsters on Wednesday. In both cases, the victims received calls from someone pretending to be a bank employee. The scammers warned of 'suspicious withdrawals' before asking for debit cards and PINs.
One incident involved a home visit from a man posing as a financial advisor, while another saw a stranger take a retiree's bank card in person. Police are now investigating whether the two crimes are connected.
In Nieder-Roden, a man claiming to be a financial advisor visited an elderly resident. The suspect, described as around 30 years old, 6 feet 3 inches tall, with short blonde hair, convinced the victim to hand over his debit card and PIN.
Meanwhile, in Jügesheim, a different retiree was approached at home between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. The visitor, aged roughly 35, 5 feet 10 inches tall, slim, with brown hair, took the victim's bank card before leaving. Both men had earlier received phone calls from someone impersonating a bank employee. The caller warned of fraudulent activity and requested their card details. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any unauthorised withdrawals occurred in either case. Police are urging anyone with information to contact the criminal investigation unit in Offenbach at +49 69 8098-1234.
The two incidents remain under investigation, with officers exploring possible links between them. No nationwide statistics on similar fraud cases against elderly victims have been published for the past year. Witnesses or those with relevant details are encouraged to come forward.
