Elderly man outsmarts phone scammer posing as a lawyer in Heringen

A 68-year-old man from Heringen narrowly avoided falling victim to a phone scam after receiving a suspicious call. The unknown caller posed as a lawyer and demanded a four-figure payment. Police are now warning residents about similar fraud attempts in the area. The incident began when the man answered a call from someone claiming to be a lawyer. The caller stated that multiple clients had financial claims against him and insisted on an immediate transfer of money. Growing suspicious, the victim refused to comply and did not send any funds.

Scammers often use 'caller ID spoofing' to make their calls appear legitimate by displaying fake or trusted numbers. Police warn that fraudsters may avoid giving their full name or proper identification, which should raise red flags. Authorities advise hanging up if a caller demands money, bank transfers, or TAN codes. They also recommend against using the redial function, as scammers may stay on the line. Instead, residents should manually dial their bank's official number or call the police on 110 for verification. Anyone who receives such a call is urged to report it to Bad Hersfeld Police Station, another local station, or through the online system at www.polizei.hessen.de.

The man's quick thinking prevented financial loss in this case. Police continue to stress vigilance against unsolicited calls, especially those involving urgent payment requests. Reporting suspicious activity helps authorities track and prevent further scams in the region.
