Elderly German man loses thousands in fake Microsoft 365 scam

An elderly man from Erzhausen has lost several thousand euros to scammers posing as Microsoft 365 employees. The fraudsters tricked him into transferring money after claiming his laptop was infected with a virus. Police are now investigating the incident.

The scam began when the victim saw a fake virus warning on his laptop. Believing it was genuine, he called the number displayed in the pop-up, thinking it was Microsoft support. The fraudster on the end convinced him that his device was compromised.

Officials advise anyone receiving unexpected calls from supposed Microsoft 365 employees to hang up immediately. Suspicious pop-ups should also be ignored, and no personal details or money should be sent. Installing unknown remote access software can put devices and finances at risk.
