ED Bolsters Summons Verification with QR Codes to Combat Cyber Fraud
The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) has bolstered its summons verification process to combat cyber frauds. The new system, featuring QR codes and unique passcodes, allows recipients to authenticate ED summons with ease. Previously, the ED introduced a summons verification system in 2021. Now, it has enhanced this system by incorporating QR codes. Assistant Director Rahul Verma, based in New Delhi, serves as the designated official to verify summonses not generated by the system. He can be reached by phone or email to prevent fraud related to fake news and scams involving impersonation of ED officers. Genuine summons will now bear a QR code, passcode, issuing officer's signature, stamp, official email, and phone number. Recipients can verify summons authenticity by scanning the QR code or visiting the ED's website and entering the passcode. The verification is available 24 hours after issuance, excluding holidays and weekends. The ED has clarified that arrests under PMLA are conducted physically, and there is no such thing as 'digital or online arrest'. The ED's new verification mechanism, featuring QR codes and unique passcodes, provides a secure and convenient way for recipients to authenticate ED summons. This move aims to combat cyber frauds and protect individuals from 'digital arrest' scams.
