The image shows a busy street filled with lots of cars and buses, as well as a person riding a bike. There is a bridge in the background, and a pole on the left side of the image with grass on the ground. There are also boards with text, likely indicating that the scene is taking place in Jakarta, Indonesia, which is known for its traffic congestion.

East Hesse cracks down on drunk driving during Carnival celebrations

Carnival season has begun in East Hesse, bringing celebrations—and stricter road checks. From 23 January 2026, Polizei Osthessen will increase traffic controls to keep roads safe. Officers will focus on drivers’ fitness, particularly those under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The campaign targets impaired driving as revelers take part in festivities. Police warn that even small amounts of alcohol or drugs can lead to criminal charges. The legal limit starts at 0.3 per mille blood alcohol concentration for most drivers. For those under 21 or novice drivers, a zero-tolerance policy applies.

Drivers caught over the limit face serious penalties. These include fines, licence revocation, driving bans, and possible imprisonment. Those who lose their licence may also need a medical-psychological assessment before regaining it. Authorities stress that alcohol can remain in the system the morning after drinking. To avoid risks, they recommend using public transport, carpools, or designated drivers. The aim is to protect everyone on the road—drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike.

The increased controls will run throughout the Carnival period. Police have made it clear that safety is the priority. Anyone planning to drink is urged to leave their car at home and arrange alternative travel.
