Earthquake Damage: DepEd Inspects Cracked Schools, Plans Relocation
Following a magnitude 6.9 earthquake on September 30, 2025, cracks have been confirmed in classrooms at three schools in Antique province. The Department of Education (DepEd) has begun inspections, with plans to relocate one school due to landslide risks.
Engineer Rex Galero from DepEd confirmed cracks in classrooms at Imparayan Elementary School, Sibalom Central School, and Cuyapiao Elementary School. The affected classrooms have been temporarily vacated, and classes moved to other available rooms.
The head of Danawan Elementary School previously raised concerns about the school's landslide-prone area. After an inspection, relocation of the school might be recommended due to loose soil. An inspection of the school is planned for October 6, with the Department of Public Works and Highways and the municipal engineer invited to join.
The team aims to finish inspecting the 19 schools with reported damage in the province by the end of the next week. After the inspections, recommendations for retrofitting or repair of damaged schools will be sent to the DepEd central office.
DepEd continues to assess the damage caused by the recent earthquake. Schools with confirmed cracks have been temporarily relocated, and further inspections are planned. The safety of students and staff remains the top priority.
