E-waste agent pleads not guilty to bribery over environmental violations

Soon Kei Chong, an agent for an e-waste disposal company, has pleaded not guilty to bribery in the Seremban Sessions Court. The charge involves an alleged attempt to pay RM50,000 to a Department of Environment (DOE) officer to avoid legal consequences for environmental violations at a facility in the Nilai Industrial Area. The offence took place on February 12, 2022, when Chong allegedly offered the bribe. The company he represented had breached the Environmental Quality Act 1974 by operating without a licence, lacking written authorisation, and failing to obtain Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approval. Waste had also been placed at non-designated premises.

The court set bail at RM20,000 with strict conditions. Chong must report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) every month and surrender his passport. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 6, 2023. If convicted, Chong faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of at least RM100,000.

The case highlights enforcement against environmental violations and corruption in waste management, specifically e-waste disposal. Chong’s trial will determine whether the bribery allegation is proven. The outcome may also impact regulatory oversight of e-waste disposal operations in the region.
