Durian Causes Multiple 'Gas Leak' False Alarms in Wiesbaden
Wiesbaden's fire department had an unusual day on Saturday, responding to multiple suspected gas leaks that turned out to be caused by a pungent fruit - durian. The strong-smelling fruit, popular in South East Asia, triggered four deployments throughout the day.
The first call came in at 14:52 at an Asian supermarket in the 'Lili' shopping center. The fire department discovered that the source of the gas-like smell was not a gas leak, but durian fruits. These fruits, delivered as part of a special promotion, were packed in an extra carton and had a powerful aroma that triggered the alarm.
The ventilation system in the shopping center then distributed the durian scent throughout the building, leading to further calls. The second deployment was at 17:47, confirming that the durian fruits were indeed the culprit. Two more calls followed later in the evening, at 21:20 and 22:40, both in a multi-family house on Waldstraße. In each case, the strong smell of durian was the cause.
Durian, while a delicacy in South East Asia, is known for its potent smell that can often lead to bans in public spaces. The Wiesbaden fire department's unusual day serves as a reminder of this fruit's unique characteristics and the potential impact it can have when not properly contained.
