Drunk driver without a license flips car near Darmstadt beer garden

A late-night crash on Spessartring in Darmstadt left two young men injured early Thursday morning. The accident happened near a beer garden just after 12:30 AM, when a car veered off the road and overturned. Police are now examining whether alcohol and an invalid license played a role in the incident.

A black Nissan Almera lost control on Spessartring, hitting a traffic sign before flipping onto its roof. The driver, a 21-year-old from Höchst, was heavily intoxicated and could not provide a valid license. His 18-year-old passenger also suffered minor injuries, and both were taken to hospital for treatment.

The road remained closed until 3:10 AM while emergency crews cleared the scene. Authorities are now investigating charges of drink-driving and driving without a license.

This incident follows a pattern of similar cases in Darmstadt. Over the past two years, police have handled around 150 drink-driving offences and 80 cases of unlicensed driving. Penalties have included fines up to €5,000, license suspensions, and even criminal charges in serious cases—such as a January 2025 crash involving a 28-year-old in the city centre.

The two injured men received hospital treatment after the crash. Police continue to probe the circumstances, with potential legal consequences for the driver. The incident adds to ongoing concerns about drink-driving and unlicensed motorists in the area.
