Drunk driver crashes into power box, leaving 4,500 homes in darkness

A drunk driver crashed into an electrical distribution box in Wiesbaden early on February 22, 2026. The collision cut power to thousands of homes and led to the driver's immediate arrest. Police later found him unharmed in a nearby underground car park.

The accident happened at around 4:25 a.m. on Führerstraße, close to Nordstrander Straße. A 26-year-old local man lost control of his black Mercedes and struck the power box, causing severe damage. The impact left roughly 4,500 households without electricity.

Residents within a 100-metre radius remained without power until Sunday afternoon. Authorities took the driver into custody after confirming he was heavily intoxicated. His licence was confiscated on the spot, and a blood test was ordered.

Police have asked anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward. Witnesses can contact Wiesbaden traffic police on (0611) 345-0.

The driver now faces legal consequences after the crash. Repairs to the electrical box were completed by Sunday, restoring power to all affected homes. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
