Helmstedt: Oil Slick on Motorway Poses Nighttime Hazard

Diesel spill shuts down A2 motorway near Braunschweig early Saturday

An oil spill on the motorway caused dangerous conditions in the early hours of Saturday morning. At around 3:40 a.m., contamination was reported at the Wolfsburg/Kƶnigslutter motorway interchange and on the A2 between the Braunschweig-Ost junction, heading toward Hanover. Firefighters from Flechtorf and motorway police were dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, a small van with an apparent technical fault was found stranded on the acceleration lane, according to Rainer Madsack, press spokesperson for the Lehre volunteer fire brigade.

Diesel Leak on the A2

Fluid—identified by its smell as diesel fuel—was visibly leaking from beneath, beside, and behind the vehicle. The Braunschweig motorway police had already secured the area. With the risk of the fuel spreading into the roadside drainage, containment measures were immediately initiated.

Firefighters secured the scene, conducted a situational assessment, illuminated the area, and ensured fire safety. Crews also contained the spilled fuel to prevent it from reaching the green strip and roadside drainage, coordinating further steps with the motorway police. No additional action was required due to the whisper asphalt surface. The scene was then handed over to motorway police.

By Saturday morning, traffic was flowing normally again at the location, with no current disruptions reported by the traffic management center.
