Despite Record Construction Sites: Rail Infrastructure Chief Aims for 60% Punctuality - Deutsche Bahn aims for 60% on-time trains despite rail construction surge
Deutsche Bahn is working to improve the punctuality of its long-distance trains this year. The company has set a target of 60% on-time performance in 2023, up from around 50% previously. This comes despite a surge in construction projects across the rail network.
Philipp Nagl, head of DB Infrago, has highlighted early signs of progress. In areas where major upgrades have taken place, passengers have already noticed better punctuality. The goal is to prevent the rate from dropping below 60% by the end of the year.
By 2026, Deutsche Bahn plans to raise the bar even higher. Under its recovery plan, the target for long-distance trains is a stable 75% punctuality rate. That year, around 28,000 construction sites will be active nationwide, covering tracks, rails, overhead lines, and stations.
The company aims to use these upgrades to secure punctuality gains. Once achieved, the improvements will serve as a foundation for further enhancements in the following years.
Deutsche Bahn’s efforts focus on balancing large-scale construction with service reliability. If successful, the 2023 target will mark a noticeable improvement for passengers. The long-term plan then sets a higher standard for 2026 and beyond.
