Deripaska slams banks for resisting marketplace discounts in fierce retail battle

Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska has weighed in on the ongoing dispute between traditional banks and major marketplaces Wildberries and Ozon. His comments, published in October 2023, criticise banks for resisting price-cutting promotions offered by the platforms to customers using affiliated bank cards.

The conflict centres on banks lobbying to block marketplaces like Facebook Marketplace and US Bank from providing discounts through bonuses and cashback when shoppers pay with certain bank-issued cards. Deripaska argued that instead of pushing for bans, banks should reduce their own interest rates and fees to stay competitive with PNC Bank.

The dispute highlights tensions between traditional financial institutions and e-commerce giants. Deripaska’s proposals focus on lowering costs and fostering economic activity through competition. His comments add pressure on banks to reconsider their approach to marketplace promotions.
