City Center Under Construction: Decathlon Moves into Former Kaufhof - Decathlon secures Hanau's Stadthof basement for 2027 sports retail hub
Decathlon will open a new store in Hanau's historic Stadthof building by mid-2027. The sports retailer has signed a long-term lease for the basement, covering 3,000 square metres of retail space. The move follows the city council's approval of construction plans on Monday.
The basement will undergo a €20 million renovation before Decathlon's arrival. Modernisation work will transform the area into a fully equipped sporting goods store. A new entrance will also link Market Square directly to the Stadthof complex, improving access for shoppers.
The city chose Decathlon after reviewing other proposals for the space. Leasing to the retailer was deemed the most financially sound option for Hanau. While the basement's future is now set, plans for renovating the upper floors remain undecided. Decathlon's nine-year lease provides stability for the city's downtown revitalisation efforts. The company already operates five stores in the Rhine-Main region and aims to expand to 150 nationwide by 2027. The Hanau location will serve as a key anchor tenant, expected to boost foot traffic in the area. Details about the negotiator handling the leasing contract have not been made public.
The project will bring a major retailer to Hanau's city centre while modernising part of the Stadthof building. With construction underway, Decathlon's opening in 2027 will mark a significant step in the area's redevelopment. The long-term lease ensures the space will remain active for years to come.
