Deadly residential fire in Neuenstein leaves three injured and building uninhabitable
A major fire broke out in a residential building in Neuenstein, Hersfeld-Rotenburg district, early on January 4. The blaze injured three men and left the property uninhabitable. Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene at around 1:35 AM.
The fire started in a ground-floor room occupied by two of the injured men. A 42-year-old suffered serious injuries, while a 35-year-old sustained moderate harm. A third man, aged 38, inhaled smoke while attempting to rescue them. All three were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Approximately 40 firefighters, four ambulances, and an emergency physician attended the incident. Two patrol units from Bad Hersfeld Police Station assisted in collecting evidence. The building housed employees of a logistics company previously known as Klumpp + Müller, which was acquired by Logistics GmbH in 2026. The East Hesse Criminal Police are investigating the cause of the fire. Preliminary estimates suggest property damage of around €15,000. The remaining residents have been temporarily relocated as the structure is no longer safe to occupy.
The fire has left the building uninhabitable, forcing residents to find alternative accommodation. Investigations into the cause are ongoing, with police and fire services working to determine how the blaze began. The injured men remain under medical care.
