Multi-family home on fire - Possible cause: fireworks - Deadly New Year’s Eve blaze in Marburg leaves 19 homeless and building condemned
A fire broke out in a multi-family residential building in Marburg on Tuesday afternoon. The blaze, which started on December 31, 2025, led to the evacuation of 19 residents and left the property uninhabitable. Authorities are now investigating whether fireworks may have caused the incident.
The fire erupted in a building on In der Gemoll street, prompting a swift response from emergency services. Firefighters worked to contain the flames and successfully extinguished the blaze by around 7:30 p.m. One person suffered minor smoke inhalation and was taken to hospital for treatment.
The Kriminalpolizei (criminal police) has taken charge of the investigation, focusing on fireworks as a potential cause. The estimated damage runs into six figures, and the building has since been declared unsafe for residents. Police have urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward. All 19 residents were safely evacuated, but they remain displaced as the structure undergoes assessment. Authorities continue to examine the scene for further clues into the fire’s origin.
The investigation remains ongoing, with fireworks currently the leading suspected trigger. The building’s residents face an uncertain return while repairs and safety checks are carried out. The total cost of the damage is expected to exceed €100,000.
