Darmstadt’s Music Academy Director Resigns After Misconduct Probe

Thomas Bauer will step down as director of Darmstadt’s Academy of Music on 31 December. His departure comes amid growing criticism over his leadership and handling of student expulsions. The city’s investigation into the allegations has so far confirmed one case of misconduct.

The Academy of Music, founded in 1851, currently has around 110 students and 40 faculty members. Under Bauer’s leadership, multiple students accused him of fostering an 'atmosphere of fear' and intimidation. Reports also highlighted arbitrary decisions, including deregistrations without hearings or written notice.

The resignation follows months of controversy over Bauer’s management style and student treatment. With his departure set for the end of the year, the academy must now address the concerns raised by students and faculty. A replacement for the director’s role has not yet been announced.
