Darmstadt's 2026 local elections to shape city council and district representation

Darmstadt will hold local elections on March 15, 2026, to choose a new city council. Voters will select 71 representatives for the Stadtverordnetenversammlung, which oversees key decisions like budgets and zoning. Alongside the main election, residents will also pick members for the Foreigners' Advisory Council and, in Wixhausen, a local district council. The city council, elected every five years, shapes Darmstadt's administration by setting tax rates, approving budgets, and deciding on planning permissions. Each voter can distribute up to 71 votes—either backing individual candidates or supporting an entire party list. Seats are then allocated using the d'Hondt method, ensuring proportional representation based on vote share.

The Lord Mayor, directly elected by citizens every six years, leads the Magistrate, whose other members are chosen by the Stadtverordnetenversammlung for the same term. In the 2026 election, the Greens secured the highest share with 22.7% of the vote, while Volt gained 9.88% and won seven seats. Beyond the city council, voters will elect the 21-member Foreigners' Advisory Council, which advises on issues affecting foreign residents. Wixhausen residents will also choose a local district council to represent their neighbourhood's interests and provide consultative input.

The election results will determine Darmstadt's political direction for the next five years. The Greens' strong performance and Volt's seven seats reflect shifts in local support. The newly elected councils will begin work on municipal policies, budgets, and community representation once the votes are finalised.
