Darmstadt and Griesheim Unite to Revitalize Historic Airfield by 2026

Darmstadt and Griesheim have reached a significant milestone in the redevelopment of the former August-Euler Airfield. The agreement, set to take effect on January 1, 2026, following approval from the Regional Council of Darmstadt, will see Darmstadt handle infrastructure and development. Griesheim will oversee community initiatives. Mayor Hanno Benz (SPD) of Darmstadt hailed this as a major step for the region.

The redevelopment project will transform the former airfield into a mixed-use site. Darmstadt's Baudezernat will be the responsible organisation for infrastructure and development decisions before the project's commencement. Geza Krebs-Wetzl (CDU), Mayor of Griesheim, emphasised the importance of this partnership for both cities' growth and development.

The redevelopment agreement is expected to come into force on January 1, 2026, following the necessary approvals. Darmstadt will manage infrastructure and development, while Griesheim will oversee community initiatives. Both cities look forward to the benefits this project will bring to the region.
