Customs Bust: 83,600 Unpaid Cigarettes Seized on German Motorway
Customs officers in Germany have foiled a cigarette smuggling attempt on the A4 motorway near Bad Hersfeld. A total of 83,600 untaxed cigarettes were discovered hidden in the trunk of a Polish-registered car, resulting in a tax loss of approximately €16,000.
The cigarettes were cleverly concealed under a black blanket in the car's trunk. The 29-year-old Polish driver was initially uncooperative, claiming to have no cigarettes and only 'Heets' for personal use. However, customs officers from the Main Customs Office Giessen conducted a thorough search and uncovered the illicit cargo. The driver later expressed surprise at the discovery, despite being the sole occupant of the vehicle.
A criminal investigation has been initiated against the driver on suspicion of tax evasion. The seized cigarettes, valued at around €16,000, represent a significant loss to the public purse.
The attempted smuggling has been thwarted, with the driver now facing potential charges. The discovery serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts by customs authorities to combat cigarette smuggling and protect the tax base.
