Crime wave hits Hersfeld-Rotenburg as police hunt multiple suspects
A series of thefts and property crimes struck the Hersfeld-Rotenburg region over the weekend of February 6–9, 2025. Police are investigating multiple incidents, including burglaries, vehicle break-ins, and pickpocketing, with no arrests reported so far.
The first incident occurred on Friday, February 6, at around 5:35 p.m., when a package was stolen from a mailbox in Friedewald. Witnesses described the suspect as a man between 160–170 cm tall, wearing glasses, a cap with hair visible underneath, a beige or light brown winter jacket, and a grey/brown backpack.
Later that night, between 11:30 p.m. on Friday and 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, a Ford Transit's driver's side window was smashed in Bad Hersfeld. Cash was taken from the glove compartment, though the exact amount remains undisclosed.
On Saturday, February 7, between 11:40 a.m. and 12:10 p.m., a 59-year-old woman lost her wallet to pickpockets near a supermarket on Erfurter Straße in Bad Hersfeld. Police described the suspects as two males of Eastern European appearance.
That same afternoon, between 1:45 p.m. on Saturday and 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, diesel fuel worth several hundred euros was stolen from an orange Scania tractor unit. The theft took place at the Nadellöhr rest area, between the Friedewald and Wildeck-Hönebach motorway exits.
Meanwhile, a commercial building on Rosental in Nentershausen was broken into between 2:30 p.m. on Friday, February 6, and 5:55 a.m. on Monday, February 9. Two laptops were stolen, and around €200 in property damage was caused.
On Sunday, February 8, between 7:55 a.m. and 3:45 p.m., the paintwork of a grey Opel Astra was scratched in Bad Hersfeld, resulting in an estimated €500 in repairs.
As of February 9, Polizei Osthessen confirmed that none of these cases had been solved.
Authorities continue to investigate the string of crimes across the region. Residents and businesses are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police immediately.
