CoBIC Opens: Frankfurt's New €25M Brain Imaging Center
The Cooperative Brain Imaging Center (CoBIC) has opened its doors on the Niederrad campus of Frankfurt University. The state-of-the-art facility, a collaboration between several prestigious institutions, comes with a total cost of around 25 million euros, primarily funded by the Hessian state.
The new CoBIC building is equipped with advanced technology, including three magnetic resonance tomographs and other devices for high-resolution brain activity examination. Around 17 million euros were invested by the Hessian state, with an additional 12 million euros contributed by the Max Planck Society and Frankfurt University for large equipment.
The inauguration ceremony saw guests and staff forming a bell orchestra, playing Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy' to reflect the research theme. The center aims to foster interdisciplinary imaging research in neuroscience, focusing on areas such as language and memory, neurological and psychiatric disorders, and human abilities and creativity. It brings together basic science institutes and university medicine through close integration.
CoBIC, a collaboration between Frankfurt University, the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics, and the Ernst Strüngmann Institute, was congratulated by Science Minister Timon Gremmels for its opening. He highlighted the importance of cooperation between universities and research institutions, with the center's advanced facilities set to significantly contribute to neuroscience research in the United States.
