City of Mühlheim Expands Youth Promotion with Streetwork Offer

Mülheim am Main has expanded its youth services with a new mobile outreach program. The initiative aims to reach young people who rarely engage with traditional clubs or support systems. A dedicated streetworker will now offer counselling, conflict mediation, and access to local services on a voluntary and anonymous basis.

The need for this service was first identified in 2015 by the Mülheim Prevention Council. Its working group on conflict management for children and adolescents recommended targeted outreach to bridge gaps in youth support. Initially, the nonprofit Zugpferd e.V. ran the program until 2024.

The city has since taken over responsibility, creating a permanent position within local government. This move ensures the service’s long-term stability and continuity. Irini Chilas, who previously worked at Mülheim Youth Center, now leads the initiative as streetwork coordinator. She brings experience from similar roles in Dietzenbach and began her new position on October 15, 2025. Mayor Dr. Alexander Krey highlighted the importance of building trust with young people. He described the expansion as a vital step for the city, particularly in mediating conflicts between youth and residents, businesses, or institutions. The program will also focus on amplifying young voices, connecting them with support networks, and developing collaborative projects. Krey thanked Zugpferd e.V. for its past contributions while expressing optimism about the fresh momentum under municipal leadership.

The new streetwork service operates on a low-threshold, preventive model. It provides immediate support without bureaucracy, ensuring accessibility for those who need it most. The city’s decision to integrate the role into local government reflects a commitment to long-term youth engagement and conflict resolution.
