City Focuses on Mobility Expansion: 'Comprehensive Rail Traffic Plan 2035+' Adopted
Frankfurt has approved a major new rail plan to expand its public transport network. The Comprehensive Rail Transport Plan (GVP) 2035 aims to make trains and trams the core of the city’s sustainable mobility. Officials say the strategy will help meet the needs of Frankfurt’s growing population while reducing reliance on cars.
The plan was developed through a joint effort by the city’s Office for Road Construction and Development, transport consultancy Intraplan GmbH, engineering firm Schüßler-Plan, and multiple transport authorities. Their work included a detailed review of 56 potential rail projects, from which 23 key measures were selected for immediate focus.
Mobility Commissioner Wolfgang Siefert highlighted the plan’s importance in a rapidly expanding city. He described the *GVP Schiene 2035+* as a crucial tool for reinforcing rail-based transport as the foundation of urban mobility. The proposal has already gained support from political leaders, who see it as a necessary step forward. Before implementation, the plan will go before Frankfurt’s Mobility Committee and City Council for final review in January 2026. While specific timelines for individual projects remain undefined, the strategy emphasises developing all transport modes together. This approach is intended to ensure the city’s long-term connectivity and efficiency.
The adoption of the GVP 2035 marks a clear commitment to strengthening Frankfurt’s rail infrastructure. The selected projects will now move to the next stage of evaluation before work begins. If approved, the plan will reshape how residents and commuters travel across the city in the coming decades.
