City Focuses on Mobility Expansion: 'Comprehensive Rail Traffic Plan 2035+' Adopted
Frankfurt has approved the Comprehensive Rail Transport Plan (GVP) 2035 , a long-term strategy to expand its rail network and improve public transit. The plan follows an in-depth review of the city’s current transport system and outlines key measures to meet rising urban mobility needs. Political leaders, including Mobility Commissioner Wolfgang Siefert, have welcomed the initiative as a crucial step forward for the city’s infrastructure.
The GVP Rail Plan builds on Frankfurt’s Mobility Master Plan, refining its goals specifically for rail transport. Developers analysed 56 potential rail projects, assessing their feasibility and impact on the city’s transit network. From this evaluation, 23 priority measures were selected for their strong alignment with mobility targets and high likelihood of securing funding.
The proposal was created through collaboration between multiple organisations. These included the **Office for Road Construction and Development**, engineering firms **Intraplan Consult GmbH** and **Schüßler-Plan**, as well as transport bodies like **RMV** and **VGF**. While the plan focuses on rail and public transit, Frankfurt is also working on broader transport improvements, such as air traffic expansion and optimised car traffic management. Before final adoption, the **Mobility Committee** and **City Council** will review the GVP Rail Plan in **January 2026**. The document does not specify all participating institutions, but its recommendations aim to address the city’s growing demand for efficient, sustainable transport.
The GVP Rail Plan sets out a clear roadmap for Frankfurt’s rail development over the next decade. If approved, its 23 priority projects will shape the city’s public transit system, supporting long-term connectivity and urban growth. The final decision rests with the Mobility Committee and City Council in early 2026.
