Citizen service continues to grow with municipal autonomy
Hanau is set to become an independent city on January 1, 2026. With this change, the Citizen Service Center at Kurt-Blaum-Platz 8 will take over all driverâs license services for residents. The move aims to centralise processes like renewals, replacements, and first-time issuances in one location.
Starting January 1, 2026, the FĂźhrerscheinstelle / FahrerlaubnisbehĂśrde fĂźr die Stadt Hanau will handle every aspect of driverâs licenses. This includes extensions, conversions of foreign licenses, and lost or damaged replacements. The shift comes as Hanau transitions from being part of a district to operating as a kreisfreie Stadt (district-free city).
Residents can book appointments for these services in two ways. Online scheduling is available through the cityâs digital portal at [www.hanau-digital.de](http://www.hanau-digital.de). Alternatively, they can call the dedicated hotline at **06181 2950-2033**. For general enquiries, the centre can also be contacted via email at **[email protected]**. The new system replaces the previous arrangement, where driverâs license matters were managed by the surrounding Main-Kinzig district. Now, all procedures will be processed directly at the Citizen Service Center in Hanauâs City Center.
The change means Hanau will manage its own driverâs license administration for the first time. Residents will need to use the new online portal, hotline, or email to schedule appointments. The centralised service at Kurt-Blaum-Platz 8 will officially open for all licence-related tasks on January 1, 2026.
