Christmas Lights Vandalism in Dreieich Sparks Extremism Investigation

Christmas lights at Dr. Walter Lübcke-Platz in Sprendlingen, Dreieich, were vandalised earlier this month. The attack, discovered on January 3, left several illuminated reindeer figures knocked over and damaged. Authorities are now treating the incident as a potential case of politically motivated right-wing extremism.

The vandalism targeted a display of illuminated reindeer, with their lighting modules torn out and the figures toppled. Despite the damage, the fastenings remained intact, and no other items were stolen. This has led investigators to suspect deliberate destruction rather than theft.

The local economic development agency filed a police report against unknown suspects. The estimated cost of the damage stands at around €300. Police have secured the crime scene and are gathering evidence, including video footage and witness statements. So far, no arrests have been made, and there are no leads on the perpetrators. Dr. Walter Lübcke-Platz holds particular significance, as it honours a politician murdered by far-right extremists in 2019. The incident has been classified as a serious offence due to this connection. Mayor Martin Burlon strongly condemned the act, stating that such behaviour would not be tolerated in Dreieich. Authorities have appealed to the public for information, urging anyone with details to come forward.

The investigation into the vandalism continues, with police exploring possible extremist motives. The damaged display has been assessed, and the community awaits further updates. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the authorities immediately.
