A stainless steel foot chain was stolen from a playground in Chicago, prompting the city to take legal action. The theft, discovered in late January, has raised concerns over child safety and led to a formal criminal complaint being filed for property damage and theft.

The incident took place on 21 January 2026, when employees from Chicago Infrastructure Service found the chain missing during a routine check. The stolen item was part of the playground equipment and deemed essential for safe use. Without it, the play area poses potential risks to children.

City Councilor Isabelle Hemsley condemned the theft, emphasizing that such acts directly endanger young visitors. Authorities have estimated the damage at between $130 and $150, though the greater concern remains the safety implications. As of now, investigators have no leads on suspects or witnesses. The city has officially pressed charges, urging anyone with information to come forward.

The theft has left the playground temporarily unsafe, with the city pushing for a swift resolution. While the financial loss is relatively small, the impact on child safety has prompted immediate legal action. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and seek public assistance in identifying those responsible.
