Chicago Officer’s Life Saved by Vest as Campaign Pushes for Police Safety
A Chicago police officer survived a shooting over the weekend, with his protective vest serving as a crucial defense. This incident has brought renewed attention to the 'Get Behind the Vest' campaign, which ensures officers receive new vests after their five-year lifespan. Initiated by former Superintendent Eddie Johnson, this foundation has already provided 14,000 vests since 2014.
The campaign began under Eddie Johnson’s leadership to address a critical safety issue. Police vests lose effectiveness after about five years, and officers often face the cost of replacement themselves. The Police Memorial Foundation stepped in to cover these expenses through public donations.
This year alone, 10 Chicago officers have been shot in the line of duty by late November. While nationwide officer shootings have dropped by 4% compared to 2024, the local figures remain a concern. The foundation’s efforts have raised $6 million since 2014, with recent support from Portillo’s, which donated 20% of sales from eight locations on Monday.
Donations remain open year-round at cpdmemorial.org. The goal is simple: no officer should have to pay for a new vest when their old one expires. The campaign continues to push for wider awareness and funding to keep officers protected.
The 'Get Behind the Vest' campaign has made steady progress, funding 14,000 vests over the past decade. With ongoing donations and community support, the foundation aims to maintain this safety net for officers. The recent shooting serves as a reminder of how vital updated protective gear remains.
