Charisse Aquino-Tugade: Pioneering Philippine Literature's Global Rise
Charisse Aquino-Tugade, a dynamic figure in Philippine arts and culture, serves as the Executive Director of the National Book Development Board (NBDB). With a background in Anthropology and Marketing from San Francisco State University, and further studies in Museum Studies at Harvard, Aquino-Tugade has significantly contributed to the promotion and expansion of Philippine literature both locally and globally.
Aquino-Tugade's impact is evident in her role as the Founding Director of Museo ng Muntinlupa and Founder of The Manila Collectible Co. She is also the primary mover behind CulturAid, an initiative that empowers and amplifies voices while connecting communities and organizations.
In 2025, Aquino-Tugade engaged international publishing partners and authors such as Butch Dalisay, Ambeth Ocampo, Claude Tayag, and Neni Sta. Romana Cruz during the Frankfurt Book Fair. This resulted in a diverse showcase of Filipino literary works, including fiction, poetry, essays, comics, and graphic novels, broadening the global market for Philippine literature.
Under her leadership at the NBDB, Aquino-Tugade has envisioned and established The Book Nook - Pinoy storytelling spaces, now numbering ninety across the Philippines, from Ifugao to Tawi-Tawi. She has also worked with Indigenous communities to reclaim their narratives through cultural mapping, heritage spaces, tours, and products. One notable project is the establishment of the CulturAid Iranun Weaving Center with Rocaya Sultan, which has initiated 100% cotton inaul weaving initiatives.
Charisse Aquino-Tugade's dedication and innovative approach have significantly expanded the reach and appreciation of Philippine literature and culture. Her work continues to empower local communities and connect them with global audiences.
