Chaotic night in Giessen: Drunk driver crashes, hit-and-run, and foiled break-in
A series of traffic incidents and a thwarted break-in have kept police busy in the Giessen area. A drunk driver caused two crashes before being arrested, while a hit-and-run on State Road L3481 left a BMW with €17,000 in damages. Meanwhile, a break-in attempt at Langgöns town hall was stopped after an alarm was triggered late last night.
The night began with a drunk driver creating chaos in Giessen and Linden. The 45-year-old man from Giessen lost control, causing two separate crashes. His car left an oil trail, and the license plate fell off, leading officers to his arrest. He now faces charges of hit-and-run, endangering road traffic, and driving under the influence.
A separate hit-and-run incident occurred on State Road L3481, where a red vehicle with visible driver-side damage struck a BMW and fled. The collision caused €17,000 in damages, and authorities are still searching for the at-fault driver.
At around 11:20 p.m., an alarm at Langgöns town hall alerted police to a break-in attempt. The suspect fled before gaining entry, leaving no signs of forced access. Investigators are now asking witnesses to come forward if they saw anything suspicious near the municipal offices.
Earlier in the week, Giessen-Süd police carried out traffic checks during Carnival celebrations. Officers inspected around 100 vehicles, uncovering offences such as driving without a valid licence and cannabis impairment.
The drunk driver remains in custody, while the hit-and-run investigation continues. Police are reviewing evidence from the attempted break-in and appealing for public help. Traffic checks during Carnival also revealed multiple violations, highlighting ongoing enforcement efforts in the region.
