Central Hesse police handle youth gun scare and child assault in 48 hours

Police in Central Hesse responded to several incidents over recent days, including a weapons report at a Grünberg youth centre and an assault on a child in Gießen. Authorities confirmed no ongoing threat to the public in any of the cases.

The events involved a suspected firearm, a violent attack on an 11-year-old, and an attempted break-in at a home in Lich. A witness alerted police to a person with a gun inside a youth centre on Theo-Koch-Straße in Grünberg. Officers launched a large-scale operation but later determined the weapon was an unlicensed toy gun carried by a 13-year-old boy. The item was confiscated, and no further danger was identified.

In a separate incident, an 11-year-old child suffered minor injuries after being assaulted near Gießen's market square. Two teenage girls attacked the victim at around 2:25 p.m. on an unspecified date. The child did not require hospital treatment.

Meanwhile, in Lich, an attempted burglary took place at a semi-detached house on Dieulefiter Straße. The break-in occurred between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 29. Police are investigating but have not released further details. Authorities handled each case without reporting wider risks to the community. The toy gun confiscation in Grünberg closed the weapons report, while investigations into the Gießen assault and Lich burglary remain active. No additional incidents of this type in Central Hesse for 2024 have been publicly documented.
