Central Hesse: CITY + DISTRICT OF GIESSEN: Entered through window + Speeding and giving the middle finger + Controls on Licher Street

Gießen saw a busy day for law enforcement on December 16, 2025. Traffic police carried out a 75-minute operation on Licher Straße, catching multiple drivers breaking the rules. Meanwhile, a pub on Bahnhofstraße was broken into overnight, prompting a call for witnesses from the Criminal Police.

The enforcement action on Licher Straße began at 14:00, where officers recorded eight red-light violations. Seven drivers crossed less than a second after the signal turned red, each receiving a €90 fine and one penalty point. One driver, aged 27, was caught both running a red light and using his phone while driving. He now faces a one-month driving ban, a fine in the mid-three-digit range, and further penalties.

In addition to the red-light offences, police issued seven citations for mobile phone use and ten for seatbelt violations. Earlier in the week, on December 12, another motorist had been caught speeding at 172 km/h on the same stretch of road. This driver also made an obscene gesture at the speed camera, resulting in a €1,500 fine, a three-month driving ban, two licence points, and potential charges for insulting behaviour. Separately, between 11:00 PM on December 15 and 11:00 AM the following day, unknown intruders broke into a pub on Bahnhofstraße. They forced open a window, entered the premises, and stole around €120 in cash. Gießen Criminal Police are now appealing for witnesses and have asked anyone with information to contact them on +49 641 7006-6555.

The traffic operation on Licher Straße highlighted persistent issues with red-light running and phone use behind the wheel. Meanwhile, the pub break-in remains under investigation, with police urging the public to come forward. Both incidents underline ongoing challenges for local authorities in maintaining road safety and preventing crime.
