Rhein and Claus set course at CDU retreat in Fulda - CDU’s Fulda conference sets stage for Hesse’s pivotal March 15 election

The Christian Democrats (CDU) are gathering in Fulda this week for a key conference ahead of Hesse’s local elections. The event will centre on strategy for the March 15 vote, with top party figures addressing members and the public. Both open discussions and private meetings are planned over two days.

The conference begins with public sessions on Friday. Boris Rhein, Hesse’s minister-president and CDU leader, will deliver a speech alongside Ines Claus, the parliamentary group chair. Their remarks will set the tone for the party’s campaign priorities.

On Saturday, discussions will move behind closed doors. Key topics include a strong economy, stable municipal budgets, and investments in schools and infrastructure. The CDU also wants safer neighbourhoods and better urban planning to improve daily life.

The party has set ambitious targets for the election. Statewide, it aims for over 30 percent of the vote, with more than 50 percent in Fulda itself. Other speakers include parliamentary state secretaries Philipp Amthor and Michael Brand, who will contribute to the policy debates.

The Fulda conference marks the CDU’s final push before polling day. Party leaders will outline their vision for Hesse’s future, from economic growth to community safety. The results on March 15 will show whether their strategy has won over voters.
